Caravan Insurance
Your caravan is your freedom, protect it so you can keep exploring
Storm damage, theft, and accidents on the road: caravans are expensive, mobile assets with unique risks. As a founder who’s earned the freedom to travel, Caravan Insurance ensures your adventures stay protected.

What could go wrong
(and why you need this)
Caravans are mobile homes worth tens of thousands, and they’re exposed to road risks, theft, and damage everywhere you travel. Rollovers, hailstorms, theft from storage, fire at campsites, your car insurance doesn’t cover your caravan, and one major incident can write off your entire investment. Without insurance, you’re left with a loan for a destroyed van and no way to continue travelling.
Scenario 1
The highway rollover
You’re towing your $75,000* caravan on a windy highway. A sudden gust catches the van, fishtailing begins, and despite your best efforts, the caravan rolls.
Total write-off. You’re okay, but your investment is destroyed. Loan balance: $58,000* . Without insurance, you still owe $58,000* with no caravan.
What Caravan Insurance covers
Total loss payout at agreed value, emergency accommodation while stranded, towing and recovery, and removal of wreckage.

When you need this
By founder stage
Protecting your touring investment
You need this immediately if you:
- Own a caravan worth more than $15,000
- Finance a caravan (lender requires insurance)
- Tour regularly (higher exposure to road risks)
- Store at caravan parks or storage yards
- Can’t afford to replace from savings
- Have expensive fit-out or modifications
Agreed value vs market value:
Caravans depreciate, but custom fit-outs add value. An agreed value is recommended for vans exceeding $40,000 or those with significant modifications.
Typical coverage
Agreed value or market value, $20M third-party liability, contents up to $10k-$30k, and emergency accommodation.
For founders enjoying travel freedom
Consider
- Full-time travel vs occasional use (different risk profiles)
- Off-road vs sealed roads only (affects premium)
- Storage security when not in use
- Geographic limits (Australia only vs overseas)

Common questions
Founders actually ask
Does my car insurance cover my caravan?
Car insurance covers the tow vehicle, not the caravan. Caravans need separate insurance.
Some policies include limited towing liability, but this doesn’t cover your caravan—only damage you cause while towing it.
What if I'm not licensed to tow the weight?
Most policies require an appropriate license for the weight you’re towing.
Check your license limits and van ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass). Towing over your license limit may void insurance.
Does this cover me if I live in the van full-time?
Standard caravan insurance is for touring use, not permanent residence. Full-time living (“grey nomading”) may require specialised cover.
Declare your usage honestly—insurers distinguish between touring and residential use.
What about damage to the tow vehicle from the caravan?
Depends on policy. Some include tow vehicle damage caused by the caravan (e.g., caravan rolling into a car).
Others exclude it. Check your policy—you may need additional coverage for a tow vehicle.
Can I claim for items stolen from an unlocked van?
Most policies require evidence of forced entry for theft claims. Leaving the van unlocked may result in denied claims. Always lock when unattended, even in “safe” caravan parks.
What if my annex or awning is damaged?
Usually covered as part of the van if permanently attached or stored inside. Free-standing annexes and awnings may have separate limits or require specific listing.
What else might I need?
Caravan Insurance covers your van, but not everything:
Your tow vehicle:
Requires separate Private Motor Insurance or Commercial Motor Insurance coverage, depending on the use.
Personal belongings:
High-value items (such as jewellery, cameras, and laptops) may require separate coverage under the Home & Contents Insurance portable items extension.
Breakdown cover:
Caravan insurance covers damage, not mechanical breakdowns. Consider roadside assistance for both the tow vehicle and the caravan.
Extended touring overseas:
Most Australian policies only cover Australia and sometimes NZ. Travelling through Asia or Europe requires international travel insurance.
